ART CLASS
so i’ve been drawing for 26 years, tattooing for 10, and painting for 5. in all that time, i had never taken one college level art course. just a lot in high school (thanks mr. G!) but it’s time for me to better myself. i’ve been a sponge over the years, and i tend to pick up everything i can from working with other artists, but it’s not actually instruction per se.
last night i attended my first class at fleisher art memorial in philadelphia. my wife and i joined as members, which has benefits in itself, and also signed up for classes. as a member you recieve discounts on supplies and classes, as well as access to several free courses. this time around i paid and signed up for color theory.
i went into this class understanding that color theory is a good portion of the basis of design. it directs the eye and helps it assemble the image it sees. it expresses emotion as while influencing the viewers emotion. but i thought this would be a total bore. “O GOD! COLOR THEORY BUAH!” here goes another dull instructional.
i was surprised. very very surprised. while it may have gotten off to a slow start, once it got rolling i was totally wrapped up in it. as an artist i tend to think i have a pretty solid handle on everything involved with what i do, but damn. there’s things about color that i truly didn’t understand. i started the class off confused. even in one three hour course i learned a great deal.
i still have 9 classes to go, and you can bet when they are done i’ll be signing up for more. to anyone who is interested in art in the philly area, i highly recommend joining fleisher art memorial and taking a few classes. it is giving me a better understanding of art and i’m sure it would do the same for you.
